While there is an abundance of mental health reports online, none of them are written by teenagers and often don't take into account young people's actual experiences. This is why YMC decided to conduct our own research project, write a report, and use it to campaign and advocate for better mental health policies for teenagers.

Firstly, we formed a school council with over 200 students from different schools to gather initial data. After a dozen or so meetings among the students and our team, we used our discussions to create a questionnaire, which we distributed across the UK. We were able to collect over 5,000 responses, representing different demographics across the country. We then combined the data which we collected with countless discussions we had with politicians, headteachers and students to write this report.

After gathering data and feedback from a representative group of teenagers across the country, we began approaching MPs across parties in the UK Parliament and began collaborating with them and gaining their support. In March 2023, our team was invited by Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP to speak in Westminster to present our report and spread awareness of our research. There, we spoke to different representatives and convinced them to take action and implement policies into their party manifestos that can improve the well-being of teenagers.

Since then, the three members of our team continued having regular discussions with party officials to contribute our viewpoint and give suggestions, including with the Labour Party, which ended up winning the election in 2024.
